LEARN MORE ABOUT GLOBAL POVERTY

Childhood should be full of exploration, learning, and growth. But children in poverty are often focused on simple survival. Limited access to safe water, education, medical care, and even safe housing result in malnutrition, child labor, abuse, and hopelessness. Poverty is a vicious cycle, but it can be broken.

With 68 years of experience, Compassion has found the most effective way to care for children is through the local church. We partner with more than 8,000 front line churches in 25 countries to deliver God’s love and care—one child at a time. Today more than 2 million children are breaking the cycle of poverty for good.

Compassion’s programming has shifted due to COVID-19, but the mission of releasing children from poverty in Jesus’ name remains the same: How has COVID-19 Affected Operations

What the Bible says about poverty: There are 178 uses of the word “poor” in Scripture; nearly all refer to the condition of economic poverty. Poverty is hunger. Poverty is lack of shelter. Poverty is being sick and not being able to see a doctor. Poverty is not having access to school and not knowing how to read. Poverty is not having a job, it is fear for the future, living one day at a time. Poverty is losing a child to illness brought about by unclean water. Poverty is powerlessness, lack of representation, and lack of freedom.

Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.” (Proverbs 31:8-9)
