Mobilize Around Your God-Honoring Passions
As people who are created in the image of God, we’re all hard-wired to be passionate about certain things. While God is passionate about all things, we’ve been given a sliver of those things to make visible in our world. Perhaps you’re passionate about a specific people group, a particular place, an activity or hobby, or a cause where there’s an injustice that you feel compelled to address.
Our passions are what our hearts are bent towards, and there’s an emotion attached to our passions—an internal spark—that feels like we’re not only being pushed toward the object of our hard-wiring, but also being pulled along a path that requires us to walk by faith.
Can we deny our passions? Absolutely. Many people spend much of their life suppressing their God-given passions. But will we ever be able to extinguish their cry in our hearts? Absolutely not.
They will come to the surface over and over in the course of our lives, and that’s because God placed them in our hearts for the world’s good, and for His glory.
Our culture can mistakingly encourage us to pursue our passions (our dreams) as an end goal—as if they become the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. And while our passions are indeed solid gold, they’re located at the beginning of the journey, not the end. They serve as a springboard to action, not as a replacement for it.
Think of your passion in this sense: God made you with an internal fuel source—a source called passion—and He fully intends for this fuel to propel you into action. This action will align with the good works He created you to do before you inhaled a breath of life on this Earth (Ephesians 2:10).
The temptation for all of us is to jump immediately to action, without discovering the passion source that’s driving us. We’re praying that you are willing to take the time and effort to more fully discover your passions.
To help you along this journey, we’re grateful to our friend and mentor, Bob Shank, for making his passion-discovery process available to our MOU community. Bob is a true Kingdom leader, a strategic life coach, and someone who would rather help equip those on the main stage, while he remains behind the curtain. He is the Founder and CEO of The Masters Program, and has had a significant lifelong impact on the leadership community at MOU.
